Psychology Practicum Placements

The North Hills location offers a training program for MFT trainees and interns, MSW interns, and pre-doctoral students at the practicum level.  The focus of the program is to provide comprehensive training and supervision in the treatment of trauma, including physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and domestic violence.  The trainee will have the opportunity to provide Individual, Family, and Group treatment to ethnically diverse children, adolescents, and their families.

Some common questions about the program:

1)  When does the training program begin?

The training year begins the first week of September and continues until August 31st.  You will be allotted two weeks (33 hours) vacation time during the training year, with sick time as necessary but not to exceed 16.5 hours.  The Clinic is closed the week between Christmas Eve and New Year.

2)   Is there an application deadline?

Applications should be sent by February.  Interviews take place in February and March to meet notification requirements in April.  However, applications may be sent throughout the year.

3)  Are there any particular days or hours required to be at the Center?

Yes.     Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for group supervision and 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the Training Seminar.  Trainees are also expected to work at least 2 evenings per week.

4)  Is there a possibility of arranging the training schedule to be at the Center for only two days?

The group supervision, the training seminar, the group schedules and room availability may not allow the trainee to come only two days a week.  Trainees will be expected to be at the clinic at least two evenings a week since most caregivers work and children are in school. Trainees can elect to come in Saturday rather than one evening.  Groups start at 4:00 p.m. or later. Most students participate in one group and provide six individual/ family treatment hours; four of these individual/ family treatment hours must be offered at or after 5:00 p.m..  Since many individual supervisors are not at the Center on Fridays, students may need to arrange for individual supervision on other days. The center’s hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Fridays. The Center is open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m..

The typical program will include the following weekly requirements:

Direct Service

  • Individual/Family Psychotherapy (6 cases)
  • Group Treatment (1.5 hours)

Supervision

  • Individual Supervision (1.5 hours)
  • 2 supervisors 45 minutes each
  • Group Supervision on one case (2 hours)
  • Supervision of group treatment (1.5 hours)

  • Case management/Paperwork (2.5 hours)
